Lead Data Engineer
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England
Do You want to shape the technical direction, influence the customer and have a say in what actually gets built? Lead Data Engineer (National Security) Salary: £80,000–£120,000Clearance: Active eDV requiredLocation: Key National Security hubs | Hybrid / secure-site working depending on programme There comes a point where another pipeline isn’t enough. Do You want to shape the technical direction, influence the customer and have a say in what actually gets built? I’m supporting a specialist Data & Geospatial SME that has recently secured strategically important National Security work ahead of significantly larger competitors — largely on the strength of its technical capability and credibility in the space. This is a senior role, operating around SFIA 5–6, with genuine ownership. You won’t be disappearing into a large delivery team. You’ll be expected to shape solutions, guide technical direction and work directly with senior customer stakeholders, including C-level contacts. What you’ll be working across Python AWS and cloud-native data services Modern data platforms ETL / ELT and scalable pipelines Data modelling and architecture Distributed data processing CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code Technical design and solution ownership The role is still hands-on, but the value is in the influence you’ll have around it. You’ll be close enough to the customer to understand the real problem, senior enough to challenge the approach, and technical enough to help shape the solution properly. Why it’s worth a look This should appeal if you want: Greater technical ownership Direct access to senior customer stakeholders More influence over architecture and delivery A specialist engineering environment rather than a huge prime Strong learning and development The chance to work on strategically important National Security programmes The business is in a genuine growth phase, and this role sits close to that expansion rather than being another hire into an established delivery machine. Clearance Active eDV clearance is required for this opportunity due to the nature of the live programme. If you’re already operating at Senior / Lead / Principal level and want a role where your technical judgement actually carries weight, this is well worth a conversation. Senior Platform Engineer
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England
If you’re spending more time maintaining platforms than improving them, this could be worth a look. Senior Platform Engineer (National Security) Location: Cheltenham / Gloucester areaHybrid: Flexible depending on programmeSalary: £75,000–£95,000+Clearance: Active DV / eDV required I’m supporting a small, engineering-led National Security SME that’s built a strong reputation for doing things differently from the larger consultancies and primes. The team is technically strong, low-ego and trusted to get on with the job. You’ll have real ownership, direct input into technical decisions and the freedom to improve how things are built rather than simply inherit someone else’s process. What you’ll be working with AWS Kubernetes Terraform Docker Linux CI/CD Python / Bash Infrastructure as Code Monitoring, automation and platform reliability The role sits firmly in Platform Engineering rather than traditional infrastructure support. You’ll be building and evolving secure cloud platforms, improving deployment and automation, and working closely with Software and Cloud Engineers across live National Security programmes. Why it’s worth a look The strongest feedback I hear from engineers in environments like this is usually about the same things: More ownership Less red tape Better technical conversations Stronger team culture Modern tooling Progression without needing to move into management It’s the kind of place where good engineers are trusted rather than micromanaged. Clearance Active DV or eDV clearance is required due to the nature of the live programmes. Manchester, Greater Manchester, England
I'm looking for a senior backend Node.js developer to join a SaaS business in Manchester for the next 3 months. The role is working across a new greenfield platform in a small development team. The role is outside IR35, and infrequent office visits for key meetings will be required in central Manchester. I'm looking for someone who's got experience blasting through a load of tickets as part of an ongoing feature development roadmap for this new platform. Operational Analyst - Wargaming & Defence
Hampshire, England
Wargaming is a niche area, but that’s exactly what makes this one interesting. Operational Analyst – Wargaming & Defence Location: South HampshireWorking pattern: 3–4 days per week on-siteSalary: £30,000–£60,000 depending on experienceClearance: Active SC required, with the ability to obtain DV / NATO clearance I’m supporting a small specialist Defence SME that uses operational analysis, modelling and simulation to help customers make better decisions around complex, high-consequence problems. The role sits somewhere between data analysis, operational research and professional wargaming. You could be building analytical models, interrogating datasets, stress-testing concepts through simulation, or turning technical findings into clear evidence for senior Defence stakeholders. What you’ll be doing Analysing complex datasets to support operational and strategic decision-making Building and maintaining analytical models and simulations Using tools such as Python or R, alongside advanced Excel/VBA Supporting or running analytical wargames Translating complex outputs into clear, defensible recommendations Working closely with Defence customers and multidisciplinary teams Experience with tools such as Command Professional Edition, Flashpoint Campaigns or Combat Mission would be a real advantage, but it isn’t essential for every level. Who could fit? There are a couple of routes into this role. You might come from a STEM, Operational Research or analytical background, with strong problem-solving skills and an interest in Defence. Or you might already understand the operational domain through Defence or military experience and want to deepen your analytical and technical capability. At the more senior end, I’d expect stronger Operational Analysis experience, confidence owning work packages and the ability to engage directly with senior stakeholders. What matters throughout is attitude: curiosity, initiative, pragmatism and a willingness to get stuck into problems that don’t always have an obvious answer. Location & Clearance This is important. You’ll need to be based within realistic reach of South Hampshire and comfortable working on-site 3–4 days per week. You must also already hold active UK SC clearance, with the ability to obtain and maintain DV and NATO clearance. If you like the idea of combining data, modelling and real-world Defence problems in a genuinely specialist environment, this is well worth a conversation. ML Engineer (National Security)
UK
I'm supporting specialist AI/ML teams working across that entire journey Machine Learning Engineer (National Security) Location: Opportunities across key UK National Security hubsLevel: Mid-level through to Senior / LeadClearance: Active SC minimum | DV/eDV particularly desirableWorking pattern: Hybrid / secure-site working depending on programme There's a big difference between experimenting with Machine Learning and seeing it survive contact with the real world. I'm supporting specialist AI/ML teams working across that entire journey — research, rapid prototyping, productionisation and deployment into genuinely challenging National Security environments. This isn't about joining a generic consultancy team that happens to have an AI project. I'm working with some excellent specialist engineering and research teams where AI/ML is core to what they do — surrounded by people who read the papers, experiment with emerging technology and genuinely care about keeping their technical edge. What you'll be working across Depending on the team and programme, that could include: Python and modern ML frameworks including PyTorch, TensorFlow or scikit-learn LLMs, RAG, agents, fine-tuning and evaluation ML research, algorithm development and rapid prototyping MLOps and production ML pipelines Model deployment, monitoring and lifecycle tooling such as MLflow, DVC or Weights & Biases AWS, Docker, Linux and CI/CD Translating emerging research into solutions that work against real customer problems These environments also place real value on engineers who can engage with stakeholders and work across multidisciplinary teams rather than disappearing into a purely research-focused silo. Who tends to thrive? You don't need to have used every framework above. I'm much more interested in smart, curious engineers who enjoy learning, can move between research and engineering, and actively keep up with a field that's changing incredibly quickly. If you've reached the point where you'd like to see more of your work make it beyond the notebook or PoC stage — and ultimately understand the impact it has in the real world — this could be a very interesting next step. Clearance You'll need active SC clearance as a minimum for the opportunities I'm currently supporting, with active DV/eDV particularly desirable for work on higher-side programmes. If you're already working in ML/AI within the secure community and curious about what some of the specialist labs and engineering teams are doing differently, feel free to get in touch. Even if you're not actively looking, I'm happy to share an honest view of the market and where your background might fit. Cloud, Data & AI Engineers
United Kingdom
Cloud, Data & AI Engineers (DV/eDV) – National Security Locations: Opportunities across all compass points, including London, Cheltenham/Gloucester, Bristol, Hampshire and ManchesterClearance: Active DV / eDV predominantly requiredLevel: Mid-level through to Senior / Lead If you're working across Cloud, Platform, Data or AI in National Security, there's a good chance you're not actively looking for another job. But you might be wondering whether there's somewhere you'd be learning more, working with better people, getting broader exposure or simply being trusted with a little more flexibility. Those are increasingly the conversations I'm having. I'm currently supporting a mix of engineering-led SMEs, specialist consultancies and growing technology businesses across the National Security ecosystem — many of which are actively expanding their Cloud, Data and AI capability. The interesting part is how increasingly cross-functional these teams are becoming. A Platform Engineer might enable Data and ML workloads. A Data Engineer might work across cloud infrastructure and AI-enabled platforms. An ML Engineer might get much closer to deployment, evaluation and seeing their work make it into real-world environments. If you want to keep your tools sharp rather than disappear into a narrow programme or technical silo, there are some genuinely interesting teams worth knowing about. Where I'm Seeing Demand Cloud & Platform – AWS/Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, Linux, automation, DevOps and DevSecOps Data Engineering – Python, SQL, ETL/ELT, Spark/Databricks, distributed systems and modern cloud data platforms AI & Machine Learning – ML Engineering, MLOps, model deployment/evaluation, Python and increasingly GenAI/LLM capability You don't need to sit neatly inside one of those boxes. In fact, some of the strongest opportunities are for engineers who enjoy working across them. Why Consider a Move? The organisations I work with vary significantly, but I've deliberately built relationships with teams offering things engineers consistently tell me they value: Strong, engineering-led cultures Broader technical exposure and progression Greater ownership and access to technical leadership Interesting, real-world National Security problems Varied hybrid models and greater flexibility where programmes allow Smaller teams where good engineers are genuinely valued I've already helped engineers join a number of these organisations, so I can also give you an honest view based on the feedback and testimonials I've had from people actually working there — not just what's written on a careers page. Clearance The majority of these opportunities support live National Security programmes, so active DV/eDV clearance is typically required. Occasionally, opportunities arise for exceptional SC-cleared engineers with a realistic route to higher clearance, but these are the exception rather than the rule. Not actively looking? That's completely fine. If you're curious about which organisations are genuinely investing, how their cultures and working patterns compare, or where you could broaden your experience across Cloud, Data and AI, I'm always happy to share what I'm seeing. If nothing else, you'll come away with a clearer picture of the market — even if your next move is still a year away. Data Engineers needed for opportunities across key UK National Security hubs Hybrid: Secure-site working required, varying by programmeSalary: £70,000–£100,000+ depending on experience and levelClearance: Active DV / eDV clearance required If you're a Data Engineer who's spending more time maintaining what already exists than building something better, this could be worth a look. I'm supporting an engineering-led organisation that's continuing to grow its Data capability across National Security, with opportunities to work on modern platforms where data increasingly sits at the heart of analytics, AI/ML and operational decision-making. The attraction here isn't just a newer stack. It's the chance to work in smaller, multidisciplinary teams where Data Engineers have a voice, work directly with good technical people and can influence how platforms are actually designed and built. Less being the data person at the end of a delivery chain. More engineering ownership. You'll typically be working across: Python and SQL AWS and cloud-native data services ETL / ELT and scalable data pipelines Spark and distributed data processing Data modelling and modern data architectures CI/CD, automation and Infrastructure as Code Data platforms supporting analytics, AI/ML and complex operational datasets You don't need to have used every technology. I'm much more interested in Data Engineers with strong fundamentals who enjoy solving difficult problems, can communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and want to keep broadening their engineering capability. This should particularly appeal if you're coming from a larger consultancy or prime and wondering whether a smaller engineering environment could offer more ownership, less red tape, better progression and closer access to technical decision-making. Clearance Most of the work supports live National Security programmes, so active DV or eDV clearance is required for this opportunity. Occasionally I can support exceptional SC-cleared engineers into roles that offer a route to higher clearance, but those opportunities are the exception rather than the rule. Not actively looking? That's completely fine. If you're curious about which organisations are genuinely investing in Data Engineering, how their cultures compare, or simply what your experience is worth in the current market, I'm always happy to share what I'm seeing. If nothing else, you'll come away with a clearer picture of the market — even if your next move is still a year away. As an industry leading, nationwide Marketing, Digital, Analytics, IT and Design recruitment agency, we are continually receiving new assignments to work on, so keep a close eye on our website, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter pages for a full list of current permanent and interim opportunities as well as marketplace news and fun stuff.Forward Role is operating as an employment agency.
